ABOUT ABEZZA
How It All Started
Abezza Resort And Spa began with a doctor, his wife and a dream.
Dr. Merickston Nicholson, MD — born in Charlotteville, Tobago — studied medicine in Zurich, Switzerland, where he met Anna Nicholson, a fashion designer from Austria. Two people from opposite ends of the world, drawn together in the Alps, and eventually drawn to 1,000 acres of Belizean rainforest.
The couple settled in the midwest United States while Dr, Nicholson practiced cancer detection and treatment. But their hearts were already elsewhere — in the tropics, in the land, in the ancient remedies and healing plants growing wild in Central America. By chance they discovered land for sale in Belize, the only English-speaking country in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea and rich Mayan history. The land was purchased in 1974.

Several times a year they journeyed from the United States to Belize. Clearing coconut plantation. Learning the land. Unraveling the natural remedies of the jungle. Laying the foundation, slowly and with intention, for something that had never existed in Belize before.
In 1986 the property officially opened as the first resort, spa and destination spa in the country of Belize. Built from the ground up on a 1,000 acres of Mayan rainforest — by a doctor who believed that nature heals and a designer who believed that beauty matters.
That vision lives in every room, every treatment, every meal prepared from ingredients grown on the land they loved. The love of nature, devotion to healing, the attention to details and the personal care dedicated to every guest — it is as present today as it was the day the doors first opened.
Today Abezza is carried forward by their son Merickston — who grew up watching this dream become a reality and now stewards it into the next generation. The same 1,000 acres. The same family. The same devotion to nature, healing, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like family.
Abezza Resort And Spa is embedded in Belize's culture, history and land. It has evolved into an environmentally conscious oasis of charm, distinction and Urban Jungle Chic — where thoughtfully curated spa treatments, farm-to-table gourmet cuisine, tropical hardwood, mahogany ceilings, thatch, palmetto, stone, up-cycled bottles, mosaic tiles, rich hues of fabrics and artwork collected on world travels, music, creativity and personal care come together in a way that is anything but ordinary.
Your host Merickston carries the legacy of the land. Melanie — your personal concierge — is who you will hear from before you arrive. She remembers your name, your preferences and the details that matter to you, curating every element of your stay so you can simply arrive, exhale and be present. At Abezza you are not a room number. You are our guest — a person, known by name, cared for with intention, and welcomed exactly as you are. Together with our warm and devoted Abezza team, we look forward to welcoming you to Belize and taking genuinely excellent care of you from the moment you arrive until long after you leave.
Come as a visitor. Leave knowing you belong.
